The Waskom Elementary
School Library has two objectives. First, the staff works hard
to introduce young readers to books and various resources
available in the library. The second is to foster a love of
reading. The library has an open door policy for students,
teachers, and parents.
Because of the
open library schedule, students and teachers are welcome and
encouraged to visit the library at any time during the hours of
7:30 - 3:45, Monday through Friday. Students in grades 1st
through 5th check-out library books, research information, and
attend different activities in the library. Our younger students
in Head Start, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten are given the
opportunity to learn about the library when they attend the "Storytime"
program that Sandra Tuthill, library aide, schedules and
presents to them.
The Accelerated
Reader program is a large influence in the elementary library.
Students can find AR books shelved according to their individual
reading requirements. As a result of the Accelerated Reader
program, book circulation continues to increase year after year.
The elementary
library offers students, teachers and parents the opportunity to
purchase books with the three Scholastic Book Fairs that it
hosts each year. The book fairs are the primary fundraisers for
the library.
In the eleven years
that she has worked in the elementary library, the aide, Mrs.
Tuthill, has seen the library evolve into a contemporary
library. The library uses a computerized program for circulation
as well as an online catalog. This program enables the library
to keep up with the increasing circulation demands and the
cataloging of new materials.
Mrs. Lower,
district librarian, is continually searching for the most
updated material for this library so that the students have
recent and accurate materials available. Mrs. Lower and Mrs.
Tuthill also entertain the students with special lessons and
programs throughout the year.
The Waskom
Elementary School Library is an essential element in the
building of a solid background of reading for students preparing
for their continuing education.
One of the resources available for the Texas Bluebonnet Program is Booktalk! This content for the site was written for kids by the Bluebonnet Program and Selection committees. The site is hosted by Sagebrush, and is accessible from the TBA home page. I want to invite each of you to check out the features.
To access the site, go to the TBA home page: http://www.txla.org/groups/tba
In the upper left-hand corner of the page you'll see a direct link to Booktalk! Take that link.
Then select the link for Texas Bluebonnet Award. You'll find picture icons of each book (as well as a pull down menu that lists each book). Take either link and you'll find a summary, author information, suggested readings, and a place for youngsters to rate each book they've heard or read.
