NUTS ABOUT ENERGY!

Waskom Middle School science students were testing the chemical energy of a peanut by burning a peanut to raise the temperature of a test tube full of water.  This experiment was to show approximately how much energy (calories) was in a peanut.  Students measured 10 ml of water into a test tube, then took the temperature.   Then they used matches to light a peanut on fire.  Students then used test tube holders to suspend the test tube over the fire until the fire went out. The students took the temperature again and used a simple calculation to determine the calories from the peanut.
